- • If this activity remains confined to a small area of
- brain, the result is a focal seizure. During this type
- of seizure, a patient remains conscious and may
- experience a strange sensation, such as a smell or
- taste, or have a brief episode of uncharacteristic
- behavior. Another common type of focal seizure
- includes the uncontrolled movement of an arm or
- leg. These seizures usually last from seconds to
- minutes and a complete recovery occurs within the
- same time period.
- • A generalized seizure occurs when the electrical
- activity spreads throughout the brain. When this
- occurs, the patient loses consciousness, falls to the
- ground and may have uncontrolled movements of
- the body, arms and legs. Control over the bowel
- and bladder may be lost. The seizure can go on for
- several minutes, then it may take several hours for
- the person to awaken.
